My new earphones!

Posted on Tuesday 4 May 2004

Kevin gave me a suprise gift after getting back from Vienna on Friday night. It is a set of earphones that I was thinking of getting a month ago.

I was looking for earphones that were comfortable and has good sound. In one issue of T3, they reviewed a few noise cancellation earphones and headphones, and Shure got the best review for their price when compared to some well known brands like Sony. I was very seriously thinking of buying them, as I would buy a good one or not to buy one at all. After some thinking, I dropped the idea of getting myself a new toy.

I was very surprised when Kevin showed me the new earphones. I tested it out right away. They aren’t true noise cancellation earphones but noise blocking earphones. After I put them on, I couldn’t hear anything but the music from it. Since the earphones blocked out all other noise, and because the earphones are in the ear canal, I could clearly hear the music. It was amazing. In one review I read, the reviewer wrote that he could almost feel the music coming out from his mouth. I now know what he means. It is a funny sensation.

For comfort, I used the foam (ear plug form) that was included in the package. The package provided different sizes to choose from and I used the smallest one. It takes some time to put it on, and learn how to put it on, but after a couple or tries, I got used to it. It was more comfortable than any other earphones that I have used before. My guess is that the others I’ve used before were too big for me. Therefore, after using them for awhile, they all gave me headaches. I haven’t really used my new earphones for a long enough time to see if it will give me the same problem but at least they are not pressing my ear bones like others did, which I believe was the reason for my headaches.

The sound from these earphones - awesome!

Excellent! In practice, The Etymotics and the Shure are much more effective than all of the active noise-cancelling technologies for most applications. I’m glad you guys were’t suckered into the Bose marketing hype.
