SARS

Posted on Friday 23 May 2003

WHO has lifted the travel restriction on HK just a few hours ago. SARS has damaged Hong Kong psychologically and finanically. It is very sad to see Hong Kong suffering from SARS in addition to their economic crisis that has been going on for years. One thing about the Hong Kong medical crew I am very proud of is that none of them step away from their duty when the city needed them the most. Medical crew in Taiwan has a different story, many doctors and nurses quit their jobs to avoid putting their life on the line. I wish someone can find the cure to stop this epidemic, so people can live their normal lives again.

I heard some rumor that the government of Thailand (to encourage tourism) will pay you $1000 if you catch SARS while visiting. Hmm… This poses an interesting question: Given that the mortality rate of SARS is ~5% and that’s only for the elderly or immuno-compromised, is it worth the gamble? It is a modern variant of the classic decision theory question: how much would you have to be paid for a one-in-a-million chance at death?
